Expert Tip: Choosing High-Quality Paint

July 08, 20242 min read

With so many paint options, suppliers, brand reputation and reviews, it is hard to know if you are really choosing a high-quality paint for your home. Better yet, know whether or not the professional you hired is actually using high-quality paint products!

Let's talk about how you can identify quality paint:

Check the Label and Ingredients

This seems obvious, but it is a great reminder! Look for paints specifically labeled as "mold-resistant," "mildew-resistant," or "designed for high-humidity areas." These labels indicate that the paint contains additives that inhibit mold and mildew growth.

Examine the ingredients. High-quality paints typically contain higher levels of titanium dioxide and other premium pigments, which contribute to better coverage and durability.

Choose Reputable Brands

Opt for well-known, reputable brands that have a history of producing high-quality paints. You cant go wrong with brands like Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr, and PPG. They are all recognized for their reliable and effective exterior paints.

Read product reviews and ratings on the brand's website or other trusted review platforms to get feedback from other homeowners.

Look for Paint with a Good Warranty

Did you know paint came with a warranty!? Many people do not! High-quality paints often come with extended warranties, sometimes up to 25 years. This is a great indicator of the manufacturer's confidence in the product’s durability and performance.

Consider Paint Type and Finish

For exterior painting in humid climates, choose latex or acrylic paints over oil-based paints. Latex and acrylic paints are more flexible and breathable, allowing moisture to escape and reducing the likelihood of mold growth. Select a finish that suits your needs. Satin and semi-gloss finishes are more resistant to moisture and easier to clean than flat or matte finishes.

Consult with Professionals - it's FREE!

Visit your local paint store and speak with local paint suppliers or professional painters who have experience with the climate in your area. They can recommend high-quality, mold-resistant paints that have performed well in similar conditions. Paint that does well in cold climates may not perform as well in high humidity!

A great way to see for yourself is to ask for sample paints to test on a small area of your home’s exterior to evaluate coverage, color, and finish before committing to a larger purchase.

Review Paint Specifications

Check the paint’s technical specifications, such as coverage per gallon, drying time, and resistance to UV rays, cracking, and peeling. High-quality paints will have better specifications, contributing to longer-lasting results.

Look for paints with low VOC (volatile organic compounds) content for a healthier environment. Low VOC paints are less harmful and reduce the risk of mold growth.

Inspect Paint Certifications

Look for certifications from recognized organizations, such as the Master Painters Institute (MPI) or Green Seal. These certifications indicate that the paint has passed rigorous testing for quality and performance.
